Sophia Brotherhood at the launch of a new project on contemporary Ukrainian Orthodoxy

The Sophia Brotherhood has announced the launch of an educational project called ‘Modern Ukrainian Orthodoxy’ aimed at overcoming religious myths, reconciliation of the Orthodox in Ukraine, and the overall consolidation of society. The first webinar within the initiative will take place on 9 April.

The project aims to debunk the destructive narratives and manipulations that accompany church topics in the public space – from issues of canon law to perceptions of church history.

Leading experts in theology, religious studies, sociology of religion, and human rights are expected to participate. Among them are Archimandrite Kyrylo Hovorun, Professor Serhiy Bortnyk, human rights activist Natalia Vasylevych, sociologist Tetiana Kalenychenko and Professor Gennadiy Khrystokin.

The programme of the webinar includes discussions on religious myth-making, the impact of social media on church discourse, and the European vision of the crisis in Ukrainian Orthodoxy. Particular attention will be paid to the issue of church unity as a challenge for contemporary theological thought.

The organisers emphasise that the dialogue format of the events will allow for an open and constructive discussion of complex topics.
