Ukrainians continue to support charity: results of the 2024 survey

According to a new report conducted by the Zagoriy Foundation in cooperation with Info Sapiens, Ukrainians continue to actively engage in charitable activities despite the difficult conditions of war and economic crisis. In 2024, 86% of Ukrainians made or were involved in charitable initiatives. This refutes popular pro-Russian narratives about ‘war fatigue’ and declining support for charity among the population.

According to the report, although the charitable activity index decreased from 7.7 points in 2022 to 6.7 in 2024, this level remains significantly higher than in 2021 (4.5 points). This demonstrates the stability and commitment of Ukrainians to charitable initiatives despite the difficult times.

The main motivations for participating in charity are compassion (33%), patriotism (17%) and a sense of duty to society (16%). Many Ukrainians prefer targeted assistance, which demonstrates personal involvement in solving specific problems.

The average monthly donation is UAH 840, and among active donors this amount exceeds UAH 2,900. According to the survey, 73% of Ukrainians made cash donations during the year. In addition, half of philanthropists were also actively involved in volunteering. The share of volunteers increased from 39% in 2022 to 43% in 2024, with young people, public sector employees and rural residents being the most active.

The survey also found that Ukrainians trust local charities the most. 51% of respondents support Ukrainian foundations, among which the leaders of trust are the Serhiy Prytula Foundation, the Comeback Alive Foundation and the Ukrainian Red Cross Society.

Despite numerous active donors and volunteers, the charity sector faces challenges, such as difficulties in raising funds for non-military projects, high competition for grants, and a mismatch between donors’ priorities and the real needs of organisations. At the same time, 88% of charitable organisations assessed their interaction with business as effective, and 34% noted an improvement in cooperation over the past two years.
