A new social initiative has been launched in Kyiv to raise public awareness of the rights of children with disabilities. The initiative involves the installation of non-standard road signs ‘Beware of Children’ depicting children with various types of disabilities.
The Children as Children initiative, implemented by Daria Gerasymchuk, Advisor to the Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights and Child Rehabilitation, in cooperation with UNICEF, aims to overcome stereotypes and prejudices against children with special needs. After all, such children often remain ‘invisible’ to society, although they are an integral part of it.

‘Such installations should encourage people to think: why do children with disabilities remain ‘invisible’ and how can we change this? After all, they exist, they are part of society, and they do not need to be idealised,’ UNICEF said.
The new road signs have been installed in the most popular places in Kyiv: on Peizazhna Alley, Kontraktova Square, Spivoche Pole and Kyiv Zoo. Their goal is not only to draw attention to the problem, but also to encourage people to think about how to make our society more inclusive.
