How to Help a Child Who Is Afraid of Loud Noises: Tips from the Ukrainian Red Cross

When a child encounters loud noises, it can cause fear and stress. In such situations, parents seek ways to protect and calm their child. Here are a few effective steps that can help:

  1. Explain the Sound: First, explain to the child what the sound means and why it is so loud.
  2. Reassure Them: Tell the child, “We are in a safe place, we are together, and we will get through this.”
  3. Practice Calming Exercises: Try breathing exercises, such as inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth, while making soothing sounds. You can also sing a song together or blow light objects (like feathers or crumbs) off a hard surface.
  4. Use Distractions: Listening to audio stories can help reduce tension, as can giving the child a lollipop or dried fruit.
  5. Add Humor: Make a funny comment for each loud noise to lighten the mood.
  6. Acknowledge Their Courage: When the danger has passed, acknowledge the child’s bravery and resilience.

These tips are developed by specialists from the Ukrainian Red Cross as part of the nationwide mental health program “How Are You?” initiated by First Lady Olena Zelenska. They aim to support children and parents in situations of stress and fear, particularly when a child is confronted with loud noises. By following these simple steps, you can help your child manage their fears and feel more confident.

We have also mentioned that three more schools will receive shelters thanks to the Lithuanian Government and the UNITED24 platform.
