The IAEA works for the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear science and technology, contributing to international peace and security. Main activities:
Nuclear energy, fuel cycle and nuclear science (INPRO program, nuclear fuel cycle and materials technologies, capacity building and preservation of nuclear knowledge for sustainable energy development, promotion of various branches of nuclear science);
Nuclear applications in the areas of food security and agriculture, health care (cancer, tomography), water resources, assessment and rational use of the marine and terrestrial environment, production of medical radioisotopes and radiation technologies, management of technical cooperation for development.
Nuclear and nuclear safety (safety of nuclear facilities, radiation and transportation safety, radioactive waste management, nuclear security, preparedness for incident and emergency response);
Nuclear verification (application of the IAEA safeguards system, implementation of the Agency’s safeguards in Iran, Syria and the DPRK).

History of the organization:
The Statute of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was adopted on October 26, 1956, at an international conference held at the United Nations Headquarters. The Agency began to exist in Vienna on July 29, 1957. On November 14, 1957, the General Assembly adopted an agreement on the relationship between the IAEA and the United Nations.
