Ambassador: Most Ukrainian refugees in Poland are ready to return after war

The overwhelming majority of Ukrainians temporarily residing in Poland express their readiness to return to their homeland after the end of a full-scale war. This was stated by Ambassador of Ukraine to Poland Vasyl Bodnar in an interview with Radio Liberty.

According to the diplomat, approximately 70% of Ukrainians who left the country under pressure want to return home. “If you talk to refugees, to people who left not voluntarily but under the force of circumstances, 70% of them will say that they want to return,” Bodnar said.

At the same time, he noted that some citizens, approximately 15-20%, are already planning to stay in Poland and have even applied for Polish citizenship. However, the majority of those with whom the diplomat speaks are clear: “If the war ends tomorrow, we are going home.”

The ambassador also commented on the situation of Ukrainian men who went abroad during the war. According to him, there is no fear among them of returning because of possible conviction. He urged to avoid dividing society into “those who left” and “those who stayed”.

“We will create additional problems for ourselves with such divisions. But the desire to bring people back to rebuild Ukraine should overcome all these emotions and stereotypes,” Bodnar said.
