Ukrainian Radio has launched a special project called ‘Radio Dictation Without Mistakes.’ It can be heard every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:20 a.m. The idea behind the initiative is to help listeners better prepare for the Radio Dictation of National Unity, an annual event that brings together Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine around the world.
As part of the programme, the project team tells the stories of previous winners, shares practical advice and explains modern language norms. Yulia Shelduko, executive producer at Ukrainian Radio, emphasises that it is important to start preparing in advance: the hosts will talk about the characteristics of the texts written by the authors who prepare the dictation and remind listeners of important nuances of current spelling rules.
Well-known writers have contributed to the texts of previous years, including Ivan Malkovych, Yuriy Andrukhovych, Iryna Tsilik, Kateryna Kalytko, and Oksana Zabuzhko. Over the years, their texts have been read aloud by Ada Rogovtseva, Rimma Zyubina, Oleksiy Hnatkovsky, and Pavlo Vyshebaba. Every year, people of all ages and professions join the campaign, and since 2020, even Ukrainian scientists from the Vernadsky Antarctic Station have been writing the Radio Dictation.
Olga Slyozko, founder of the Bakerstreet music and sound production studio, also worked on the new project. The Ukrainian Radio team reminds us that the Radio Dictation is not only a test of knowledge, but also a symbol of unity and support for the Ukrainian language.
Last year, the broadcast of the Radio Dictation attracted over half a million viewers on public platforms, and this year’s 25th anniversary Radio Dictation was watched by over 110,000 users on the Ukrainian Radio YouTube channel alone. Traditionally, the event is timed to coincide with Ukrainian Writing and Language Day, which is celebrated in October.
