Ukraine has expanded the list of free medical services for veterans and people affected by the war. The support includes not only basic medical services, but also assistance with psychological adaptation, management of chronic conditions and social integration.

The key innovations include the expansion of psychological care, including psychotherapy and referrals to psychiatrists, psychologists or psychotherapists. Support is also provided in the treatment of addictions, health monitoring, and planning an individual treatment route, taking into account chronic diseases and the effects of combat trauma. Special attention is paid to pain management, post-traumatic stress disorder and neurological disorders.
A separate area of work is the involvement of social workers. They advise veterans on access to social and medical services, help them apply for benefits, organise cooperation with volunteers and support their adaptation to civilian life. This interaction is aimed at ensuring a sustainable return to the civilian environment.
Services are provided at the primary healthcare level by a healthcare facility that has a contract with the National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU). Participants in hostilities, persons discharged from military service, and those who have been disabled as a result of war are eligible for these services. A prerequisite is a valid declaration with a family doctor or general practitioner.
For more information on the available services, you can contact the NHSU contact centre at the short number 16-77 or your doctor.
