Returning to peaceful life for female and male veterans is not only a transition to new conditions, but also a serious challenge. The Office of the Ombudsman of Ukraine reminds that successful adaptation is possible with support, knowledge of their rights and willingness to seek help.

Based on the experience of communicating with Ukrainian veterans, the Office’s experts identify five main areas that should be taken into account. Firstly, it is important not to delay in obtaining combatant status and benefits — this will open up access to medical, psychological and social support. Secondly, when applying for a job, you should emphasise the benefits of your service, such as responsibility, stress resistance, and teamwork.
Psychological support is another critical resource, and seeking professional help is not a weakness, but a sign of self-care. Veterans are also advised to join veteran communities to help avoid isolation and find new social connections.
It is equally significant to know your rights and responsibilities. In case of need for clarification or violation of rights, veterans can contact the Office of the Ombudsman of Ukraine by phone, mail or in person at the address in Kyiv.
