How much salt do Ukrainians consume?

Ukraine has launched Salt Awareness Week, an initiative to draw attention to one of the key health threats that is often underestimated. According to the STEPS study, which assesses the prevalence of non-communicable disease risk factors, Ukrainians consume an average of 12.6 grams of salt per day. This is 2.5 times more than the WHO recommended intake of 5 grams per day, which is roughly equal to one teaspoon.

The data also shows that one in five Ukrainians regularly eats foods with a high salt content, such as smoked meats, sausages, pickles, canned food, and salty snacks. This diet is directly linked to high blood pressure and the risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes.

The Awareness Week is an opportunity to pay attention to your daily habits and learn more about the impact of salt on your health.
