More women than men will compete at the Olympic Games to be held in Los Angeles in 2028. This was announced by the International Olympic Committee.
The programme will include 36 sports, including 351 disciplines – 22 more than at the last Olympics in Paris. 10,500 athletes will compete: 5333 women and 5167 men. The IOC says that gender equality has become a ‘key consideration’ in determining the quota of athletes and the number of competitions at the Games. As a result, for the first time in history, women will have an equal number of teams as men in all team sports. And in football, there will even be more women’s teams – 16 against 12 men’s teams.
An additional women’s weight category was added to boxing, which will ensure parity in the competition. Two additional women’s teams were added to water polo to ensure equality.
