The United States will close USAID by 1 July 2025. The US State Department has informed Congress that it will take over some of USAID’s functions as part of its reorganisation. Programmes that do not meet the priorities of the Donald Trump administration will be closed. This is stated in an official statement by the State Department.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke about the implementation of the America First programme of assistance to foreign countries. ‘Unfortunately, USAID has long since moved away from its original mission. As a result, the returns have been too small and the costs too high,’ Rubio said.
‘We are refocusing our foreign assistance programmes to align directly with what is best for the United States and our citizens,’ the Secretary of State said.
According to CNN, as part of the agency’s restructuring, ‘virtually all non-statutory positions’ will be eliminated, and USAID employees will begin receiving layoff notices.
