US may deprive 240,000 Ukrainians of legal status

Donald Trump’s administration is considering cancelling the temporary legal status of 240,000 Ukrainian refugees, which would pose a risk of deportation. Reuters reports this, citing sources in the White House.

According to journalists, this decision is part of Trump’s broader strategy to tighten migration policy, which includes the cancellation of humanitarian programmes introduced by the Joe Biden administration. In total, more than 1.8 million migrants may be at risk.

The final decision is expected to be made in April. At the same time, US Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said that her agency was not yet aware of such plans.

Earlier, the United States had already suspended applications for the Uniting for Ukraine programme, which allowed Ukrainians to receive two years of protection, the right to work, study and health insurance.

Trump has repeatedly promised a tough migration policy, including the abolition of birthright citizenship and restrictions on entry for migrants across the southern border. The US is already using military aircraft for deportations, but some countries, such as Mexico and Colombia, have refused to accept deportees.
