Humanitarian demining almost doubles in Ukraine

As of June 2025, 108 mine action operators have already been certified in Ukraine, and the areas that have received the status of safe have increased by almost 50% compared to last year. Colonel Oleh Shuvarskyi, Head of the Mine Action Department of the Ministry of Defence, said this during the roundtable.

According to Shuvarsky, Ukraine currently has five national standards in place for mine action, and quality control of demining has been significantly intensified. The Ministry of Defence, together with other agencies, continues to increase the number of teams responsible for inspecting the cleared areas.

Since the beginning of the year, 241 sites with a total area of 32 square kilometres have been inspected. Nevertheless, the total area of potentially explosive contaminated areas in Ukraine is 139,000 square kilometres, of which 14,000 are water bodies. Due to active hostilities, demining is currently possible only on 31,000 square kilometres.
