Social assistance to Ukrainians in Germany may be cut

Ukrainian citizens who are in Germany under temporary protection status may lose some or all of their social benefits due to violations of the rules. This applies, in particular, to refusing to participate in integration courses, job offers or failing to comply with reporting rules.

Grounds for reduction of benefits

Social assistance, which covers the costs of housing, food and other basic needs, is provided in accordance with German law. However, its recipients must fulfil certain conditions. The main grounds for reducing benefits are:

Refusal to participate in integration courses. These courses involve learning German and getting acquainted with the cultural characteristics of the country. For the first violation, payments are reduced by 10%, for the second – by 20%, and for the third – by 30%. The duration of sanctions depends on the number of violations and can range from one to three months.

Refusal of employment or training. In the event of two refusals to work or study within a year, payments may be completely suspended for up to two months. If a year has passed between violations, previous cases are not taken into account.

Failure to comply with reporting rules. Citizens must timely notify the employment centre of employment, change of residence or marital status. Concealment of such information may result in fines or legal liability.

Amount of social benefits

The amount of financial assistance is determined by age and marital status. For example, single adults receive €563 per month, and children under 6 years of age receive €357.

How to avoid benefit cuts

Experts recommend following the established rules, participating in integration courses, not refusing to work without good reason, and informing about any changes in your situation in a timely manner. This will help to avoid financial losses and legal problems.
