EIB provides €4.7 million for reclamation of Hrybovychi landfill in Lviv

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has provided €4.7 million to improve waste management at the Hrybovychi landfill in Lviv. The funds, which are backed by EU guarantees, will be used to carry out landfill remediation works, which is a critical step for environmental sustainability and the city’s development. The funding will enable the completion of the second phase of the project, which will include the installation of drainage systems, covering the landfill with soil and planting grasses to reduce erosion and improve the landscape.

In addition, it is planned to build a surface water treatment tank and upgrade groundwater monitoring wells to ensure environmental safety. Upon completion, the landfill site will be transformed into a modern green space and park for recreation for Lviv residents. The importance of this project has been emphasised by both local authorities and international partners, including the EIB and the EU.

‘The reclamation of the Hrybovychi landfill is an important project for Lviv, which aims to address the city’s critical environmental challenges,’ said Oleksiy Kuleba, Vice Prime Minister for Reconstruction of Ukraine. The first phase of the EIB-funded reclamation has been underway since 2020 as part of the Municipal Infrastructure Development Programme for Ukraine.
