One woman is killed every 10 minutes in the world. This is stated in a report by UN Women and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
In 2023, approximately 140 women were killed by their partners or close relatives every day. In total, 85,000 women became victims during the year. More than 60% of them were killed by their significant others.
According to the report, the highest number of murders of women by partners and other family members was recorded in Africa and Asia. 21,700 and 18,500 women were killed there, respectively. The third place is occupied by America, where 8,300 women became victims. However, these figures do not show the real picture, according to the UN. ‘We see these figures as the tip of the iceberg, because not all women’s deaths are reported,’ says UN Women Deputy Executive Director Nyaradzai Gumbonzwanda.
