1000 days of resilience: the world united in support of Ukraine

Ukraine has been fighting for its freedom and independence for 1,000 days, resisting full-scale Russian aggression. This date has become the occasion for a global wave of solidarity. Within two weeks, support actions were held in dozens of countries around the world, from Antarctica to Peru. Unbroken for 1000 Days bracelets in the colors of the Ukrainian flag became a symbol of unity. These bands were made by members of the digital Ukrainian community Strichka.

Solidarity actions in Europe

In Berlin, hundreds of people took part in the “Walk of Unity and Remembrance”. Despite the rain and cold, the participants walked 1000 symbolic steps – one for each day of the Ukrainian struggle. People held flags, candles, and posters calling for support for Ukraine. The participants emphasized that Ukraine is a shield for the whole of Europe, and its struggle is a defense of the common values of freedom and democracy. Later, a rally was held near the Russian embassy, where speeches were made about the consequences of the war, and Ukrainian musicians, including bandura players, performed.

Numerous actions were also held in Italy. In the city of Ancona, participants marched through the central streets with candles and flags to the tragic song “Plyve Kacha,” which became a symbol of remembrance for the dead. The action ended with a rally where they talked about the Maidan, 1000 days of resistance, and the tragedy of the Holodomor. Andrii Podolskyi, a participant of the action, recalls,

“It was very atmospheric. For the first half of the route, we walked through the very crowded city center, through a living corridor of people in a procession with a flag and candles. It was monumental and tragic. The second half we walked through a large and crowded square to the song of Kozak System. At the end of the way, an air raid siren sounded so that Ankona could hear for a minute what Ukrainians have been hearing for 1000 days.” And in Rimini, local officials joined the rally and expressed their support for Ukraine.

Support outside Europe

Solidarity actions were also held in the United States, the United Kingdom, Finland, Estonia, Poland, Ireland, Slovakia, Peru and other countries. In many cities, people came out with posters informing about the consequences of Russian aggression and calling for increased international assistance to Ukraine.

Even at the Vernadsky Antarctic station, Ukrainian polar explorers joined this global campaign. They took a photo to thank the international community for their support and called for continued assistance, as Ukraine’s struggle is important for the protection of the whole of Europe.

The symbol of all these actions is the blue and yellow bracelets “Unbroken for 1000 Days”. They are worn by both Ukrainians and foreigners to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

These events reminded us that the struggle of Ukrainians is a struggle for freedom of the entire democratic world. The 1000 Days of Unbreakable Resilience was another confirmation that Ukraine has strong support from all over the world.
