The situation with mines in Ukraine remains critical. According to preliminary estimates, the total area contaminated by explosive devices is about 139,000 square kilometres, which is approximately 23% of the country’s territory.
This was stated by Sergiy Reva, Director of the Mine Action Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, during the presentation of the online course ‘Don’t Stand Still — Switch on: Light, Heat, Internet’.
‘The SES is implementing new projects with the Eastern Europe Foundation. And these projects are really important today. We are talking about energy today, this is our present, this is what every Ukrainian is facing today,’ Reva said.
Sergiy also stressed that the scale of the problem requires comprehensive measures, among which public awareness is a significant one. People need to understand that the mine danger is real and threatens their lives and health.
In this regard, experts emphasise the need to conduct large-scale information campaigns aimed at raising public awareness of the rules of safe behaviour in areas potentially contaminated with explosive hazards.
