The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has presented a draft Regulation on an Assistant for a Child with Special Educational Needs in Preschool Education Institutions. The document, which is currently being submitted for public discussion, establishes the principles of activity, responsibilities of the assistant and defines the procedure and conditions for their admission to the educational process.
According to the document, the main principles of the assistant’s activity are cooperation with the staff of the preschool education institution and the child’s parents (legal representatives), as well as compliance with ethical standards, confidentiality and respect for the child’s dignity. The assistant provides for the social and domestic needs of the child, participates in the educational process, assists during games and other activities, as well as monitors the child’s health and, if necessary, interacts with medical professionals.

Admission of an assistant to the educational process requires a written application from parents, signing an agreement with the institution’s management, special training and medical examination. Both parents and social workers can be assistants.
