According to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, more than 1.2 million Ukrainians are diagnosed with diabetes. The most common form of the disease is type 2 diabetes, which accounts for about 90% of all cases.
Health Minister Viktor Lyashko noted that the actual number of patients could be much higher, as type II diabetes is often asymptomatic. That is why it is so important to undergo regular medical examinations and screenings.

‘The cunning of type II diabetes is that at the beginning of the disease, there are practically no signs and symptoms. This leads to the fact that the first diagnosis is made when a person has been ill for several years,’ the Minister stressed.
In order to ensure that diabetes patients have access to affordable treatment, Ukraine has implemented the Affordable Medicines programme. It provides free or partially compensated access to the necessary medicines. In 2024, almost 600,000 Ukrainians have already benefited from the programme.
