Mini wind turbines on rooftops: Brussels tests new technology for green energy

In Brussels, an experiment has begun using mini wind turbines on building rooftops to generate electricity. The first turbine, developed by the startup Renewind, has already been installed on a residential building in the Laeken neighborhood, reports The Mayor.

Unlike traditional wind turbines, which are usually placed on offshore platforms or mountain tops, Renewind’s mini wind turbines can be integrated directly into the urban environment. They harness wind acceleration at the edge of rooftops to generate energy, which can be particularly beneficial for cities with limited sunlight.

It is expected that one such turbine will produce between 1 and 3 MWh of electricity per year. The installation cost for one mini wind turbine is approximately €6,000. Plans are in place to install ten such turbines on a single building and expand the project to other regions of Belgium.

According to Brussels climate advisor Benoît Hellings, this technology will enable year-round electricity production with stable and predictable results.
