‘Defence of Ukraine’ for all: schools abolish gender gap in lessons

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has made changes to the teaching of the subject ‘Defence of Ukraine’. According to First Lady Olena Zelenska, boys and girls in grades 10-11 will now study the subject together, to the same extent and according to an updated programme that is as close as possible to the realities of wartime.

‘The gender division has recently been cancelled, and students will be divided by number – from 8 to 15 in each group. They will study not once a week as part of a lesson, but once a month, but all day,’ Zelenska wrote.

The students will learn first aid, tactical medicine, drone control, radio communications, as well as skills that promote emotional stability and the ability to act in extreme situations. Classes will be held once a month for a full day in specially created training centres with interactive equipment and simulators.

‘The state has already allocated funds to create special training centres in communities: interactive equipment, simulators, etc. will be purchased there. In small groups, children will be able to better focus on practical skills that literally save lives in the face of a full-scale invasion,’ the First Lady said.

The abolition of gender segregation in the Defence of Ukraine lessons will help reduce gender stereotypes and prepare the younger generation to defend the country in the current environment.
