According to health officials, 114,487 cases of ARVI were registered at the beginning of October. From September 30 to October 6, 2,826 patients were hospitalized, including 1,678 children. Additionally, during this week, there were 11 deaths among adults due to COVID-19 complications, with the deceased not having received preventive vaccinations against the coronavirus.
Vaccination — Key to Prevention
The most effective means of preventing COVID-19 and influenza remains annual vaccination, especially for at-risk individuals. It is important to note that the influenza vaccine does not protect against COVID-19 and vice versa. However, vaccinations can be administered on the same day or with minimal intervals between them.
COVID-19 vaccinations continue to be free for the population. In Ukraine, health officials are using omicron-specific Comirnaty vaccines from Pfizer for adults and children. To receive a vaccination, individuals should contact their family doctor.
Recommendations for Revaccination
According to updated recommendations, most people only need one COVID-19 vaccination. Revaccination every 6-12 months is recommended for individuals in at-risk groups, such as:
- Adults and children with weakened immune systems or chronic diseases.
- Pregnant women.
- Individuals over 60 years old.
- Adults and children at risk of severe disease.
- Members of professional risk groups (such as doctors, teachers, military personnel, etc.).
Complications of Influenza and Vaccination
Influenza can cause serious complications, such as damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys, and more. Therefore, annual vaccination against influenza is recommended, although it is not included in the list of free vaccinations. Vaccines from French and Korean manufacturers are already available in pharmacies, certified, and have passed state quality control.
Disease Statistics
It is worth noting that last year, during the epidemic season of 2023/2024, 4,715,963 Ukrainians were infected with ARVI, influenza, and COVID-19. During this period, there were 1,028 deaths registered in Ukraine: 82 due to influenza complications and 946 among individuals who tested positive for COVID-19.
