The Committee noted that the activities of Hibakusha, those who survived the atomic attacks in 1945, have played a crucial role in creating a global movement aimed at raising awareness about the catastrophic consequences of using nuclear weapons. For nearly 80 years, no nuclear weapon has been used in war, a result of the efforts of Nihon Hidankyo and other Hibakusha representatives.
It is emphasized that the existing “nuclear taboo,” which stigmatizes the use of nuclear weapons, is currently under pressure. Nihon Hidankyo, founded in 1956, actively advocates for support for those affected by atomic bombs and for the abolition of nuclear weapons, striving to create a safer world for future generations.
