Recognition and Awards
In 2016, Kang received the International Booker Prize for her novel “The Vegetarian.” This work was translated into Ukrainian in 2017 by the publishing house KM-BUKS.
Plot and Style
The main character of “The Vegetarian,” Jing-hae, wakes up one day with the realization that she will never eat meat again. This turning point concludes a narrative that initially appears familiar to readers.
The genre of the novel balances between a domestic thriller, a parable about transformation, and a meditative exploration of life. The narrative is told from the perspective of the protagonist’s inconsequential husband, who works in an office, and her preoccupied older sister. These characters experience the pains of creativity and strive to establish their lives, while Jing-hae herself stops doing anything at all.
Han Kang continues to impress the world with her unique style and profound themes, further affirmed by her receipt of the Nobel Prize.
