The United Nations has faced a critical shortage of funding to help Ukrainians in the coming winter, especially given the significant damage to the country’s energy infrastructure. According to Suspilne, this was reported by Caroline Lindholm Billing, a representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

According to her, UNHCR currently has only 47% of the necessary funds to support millions of Ukrainians affected by the war or forced to flee their homes. The situation is deteriorating due to the intensification of hostilities and constant shelling of infrastructure, which leads to new waves of internal displacement.
‘Almost 99,000 people, for example, have evacuated or fled frontline villages in Donetsk region since 1 August,’ said Billing.
UNHCR is actively working with Ukrainian organisations to provide support to internally displaced people and assist the most vulnerable, especially as winter approaches. However, without additional funding, the scale of assistance will be limited, which could have serious consequences for millions of Ukrainians.
