Ukrainian libraries received 27 thousand books from British publishers

Libraries in different regions of Ukraine will receive 27,000 new books in English and Ukrainian. This is the second batch of books provided as part of a joint initiative of Ukrainian and British organisations launched in 2023.

The project is being implemented by PEN Ukraine in cooperation with Book Aid International, PEN International, English PEN, Pineapple Lane Publishing House and Humanitarian Nova Poshta. It is a continuation of the Unbreakable Libraries initiative aimed at supporting libraries affected by the war.

In 2023, a survey was conducted among Ukrainian libraries to determine their needs. Based on the data obtained, Book Aid International has compiled a selection of new books from leading British publishers. The first batch of 25,000 copies has already been delivered to 120 libraries in different regions of Ukraine.

The new batch includes about 12,000 books for children and teenagers, including more than 8,000 unique bilingual books published by Pineapple Lane. Ukraine also received 3,000 children’s books in English and 700 books for children from Ukrainian publishers.

The remaining 15,000 books are multi-genre literature for adults, including classics, biographies, memoirs, reports, essays and contemporary prose in English.

The books will be distributed as part of the Invincible Libraries project during literary volunteer trips and with the help of the Humanitarian Nova Poshta.
