In the village of Mykulychi, Nemishayivka Territorial Community, Bucha District, Kyiv Oblast, a new nearly zero-energy consumption (NZEB) school is soon to be built. This project, reported by the Confederation of Builders of Ukraine, is a significant part of the recovery efforts, replacing two schools destroyed during missile strikes in February-March 2022.
Funding and Support
The project is funded by Finland through the Green Recovery Program for Ukraine, as well as by the international financial organization NEFCO. In December 2022, Finland announced a contribution of 5 million euros, emphasizing support for education and energy efficiency as key areas of Ukraine’s recovery.
Restoration of Educational Infrastructure
The schools in Mykulychi were severely damaged due to the war, and children were relocated to educational institutions in nearby villages and towns. The new school will not only restore educational spaces for children but will also provide a modern, energy-efficient learning environment.
Features of the New School
The new school will be constructed to EU and NEFCO standards, featuring a modular, prefabricated wooden frame designed to accommodate nearly 200 students from primary to middle school (grades 1-9). Energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions, including solar panels, were developed based on a report by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The project aims to source over 38% of the necessary energy from renewable sources.
Technology and Environmental Friendliness
The building will have a prefabricated wooden frame, reducing on-site construction work and ensuring high quality through factory control. Solar photovoltaic panels will be installed for additional and backup electricity, highlighting an environmentally friendly approach to design and construction.
The completion of the new school will not only restore the educational process but also enhance the quality of the learning environment through innovative technologies and energy-efficient solutions.
