In the first eight months of 2024, 458 bone marrow transplants were performed in Ukraine, according to a press conference on Acute Leukemia Treatment in Ukraine. Since this year, bone marrow transplantation has become free of charge for patients under the state program of medical guarantees.
“Each hospital contracted with the NHSU (National Health Service of Ukraine) to perform bone marrow transplants receives payment for one patient from UAH 757 thousand to UAH 2.5 million, depending on the complexity of the service provided. This is the most expensive payment among all 44 packages currently available in the PMG. During treatment, the patient is guaranteed pre-transplant examinations, preparation and sampling of cells from the donor, cryopreservation, cell transplantation and the post-transplant period,” said Iryna Kondratova, Deputy Head of the NHSU.
Today, 25,000 patients with blood cancer are registered in Ukraine, of which about 1,500 are diagnosed with acute leukemia, the most aggressive type of blood cancer. The main method of treatment for these patients is allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, which uses donor stem cells.
The Ukrainian bone marrow donor registry currently has 13,000 potential donors, of whom 7 have already become donors since 2018.
