Dangerous Fog and Massive Fire Threat to Ukraine

In the coming days, the synoptic situation in Ukraine will worsen significantly due to dense fog and a high risk of wildfires in ecosystems. During the night of Saturday, September 19, the western regions of the country will be trapped in thick fog that will persist until morning. Visibility on roads will drop to critical 200–500 meters. Meteorologists have declared the first, yellow level of meteorological danger. Law enforcement advises drivers to reduce speed and increase the distance between vehicles.

At the same time as the worsening visibility in the west, several central and southern regions will face a critical fire threat. On September 19 and 20, an extraordinary level of danger will be recorded in Ternopil and Cherkasy regions. By September 21, a similar situation will be observed in the territories of Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia. Dry weather promotes rapid fire spread over large areas. Representatives of the State Emergency Service are demanding the cessation of burning in forest stands, firebreaks, and near fields. Burning dry grass remains strictly prohibited due to the risk of large ecological consequences.
