Ukrzaliznytsia introduces new six-zone fare system on suburban trains

Key points

  • Ukrzaliznytsia is implementing a new six‑zone fare system on suburban trains – the fare within each zone is fixed regardless of the actual distance travelled by the passenger.
  • The fare grid includes six zones – from 30 UAH for up to 50 kilometres to 150 UAH for distances over 250 kilometres.
  • Fares will be introduced gradually – from 15 September in Kyiv, Chernihiv and Zhytomyr regions, and from 22 September in Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv and Cherkasy regions.
  • The changes are driven by arrears from some local administrations for subsidised passengers and the rising cost of electricity and fuel.

Ukrzaliznytsia introduces a new six‑zone fare system on suburban trains, under which the fare within each zone is fixed regardless of how many kilometres the passenger actually travels.

The fare grid includes six zones:

  • up to 50 kilometres – 30 UAH;
  • 51–90 kilometres – 55 UAH;
  • 91–130 kilometres – 75 UAH;
  • 131–170 kilometres – 95 UAH;
  • 171–250 kilometres – 115 UAH;
  • over 250 kilometres – 150 UAH.

The fares will be rolled out gradually. Starting 15 September they will apply in Kyiv, Chernihiv and Zhytomyr regions, and from 22 September they will begin to be used in Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv and Cherkasy regions. Later, the six‑zone system is planned to be expanded to other regions of Ukraine.

The company explains the changes as a result of a complex financial situation in suburban transport. Some local administrations chronically fail to pay for subsidised passengers, and the cost of transport is rising due to higher electricity, fuel and other resource prices.

Ukrzaliznytsia expects that the new model will allow the existing suburban connections and stops to be preserved, and will direct more funds towards the repair and modernization of suburban trains.
