The Kyiv therapeutic garden at VDNG has entered the top five finalists for the New European Bauhaus Prizes. This was reported by the urban bureau Big City Lab, which developed the concept and project of the space in collaboration with the architectural bureau PUPA.
The jury selected the Kyiv project from over 700 applications in the category “Strengthening Local Democracy and Ensuring Inclusion”. The New European Bauhaus Prizes is an annual award of the European Commission that recognizes initiatives that combine sustainability, aesthetics, and inclusiveness and contribute to the development of cities.
The therapeutic garden was opened at VDNG in October 2025. It is a barrier-free space for the recovery of veterans and military personnel, as well as all visitors. The idea of the space is to help recovery through contact with nature, movement, and sensory interaction. The garden works with the five human senses – sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste.
An adaptive sports ground, zones for individual rest, a place for group meetings, a green room “Circle of Warmth”, and a children’s playground have been arranged on the territory. Gardening therapy, physical practices, art therapy, and masterclasses are held in the garden.
The space was designed to be completely barrier-free. The paths have a solid non-slip coating, elevated mobile beds were installed for gardening, and the rest areas are equipped with benches with backrests and armrests. Nearby, there are places for wheelchairs, so the garden remains accessible to people with different needs.
