UNESCO announced the acceptance of applications for the 2026 cycle of the UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers Fellowship Programme (Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowship Programme), which supports young scientists in conducting postgraduate research for sustainable development and international cooperation. Applications are accepted until September 30, 2026.
The program is funded by the Japanese government. Within the cycle, ten fellowships will be awarded to researchers from eligible countries, including Ukraine. Successful candidates will receive up to $10,000 for a research stay lasting from three to nine months at a Japanese university or research institution.
The thematic focus of the cycle covers relevant areas. The fellowship will support research dedicated to heritage preservation, sustainable development, and artificial intelligence. Among the five priority areas is “Artificial Intelligence and Education”.
The requirements for candidates are determined by the participant’s profile. Applicants must be 40 years old or younger, have at least a master’s degree, and obtain the consent of a scientific supervisor at a Japanese institution before submitting an application. Applications are accepted only through the National Commission for UNESCO of the respective country – no later than September 30, 2026, by midnight Paris time.
