France has become the first European Union country to pass a law banning social media – TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram – for children under 15. The country’s parliament has supported the bill, according to The Guardian.
From September 1, children under 15 will be prohibited from creating new accounts on social media. For already registered users, the restrictions will come into effect from January 2027.
The platforms will themselves verify the age of users and close the accounts of those who do not meet the requirements of the law.
The law still needs to be reviewed by the French Constitutional Council.
The document does not provide for penalties for children or their parents. An exception was made for online encyclopedias and educational platforms, which minors will still be able to use.
