In Odessa, as a result of the Russian attack on July 21, the historical rental house of Margulis on Marazliivska was damaged.
The six-story building on Marazliivska Street, 34B, was built in 1912 by engineer Felix Pappé. It is one of the examples of modernism in the city – the architect combined the stylistics of jugendstil with neoclassical tendencies and features of the empire style.
The building belonged to engineer Ignatius Margulis, who held the position of director of the Odessa telephone station, and also rented the city power plant.
The house stood out from other typical multi-apartment buildings of the 1910s with its scale and innovative block approach to design.
Due to the uneven landscape, the first floor from Marazliivska Street turns into a semi-basement, while the section from Sabansky Lane has six full floors. Thanks to this, the house remained the tallest in Odessa for many decades.
The apartments in the house were intended for wealthy townspeople – this is confirmed by the decoration of the interiors.
A memorial plaque is located on the facade in honor of the Ukrainian artist Grigory Kryzhevsky, who lived there.
