The Verkhovna Rada has appointed Serhiy Koretskyi as Ukraine’s new Prime Minister – 289 MPs voted in favour of his nomination, with one against.
Koretskyi’s candidacy had been proposed the day before by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This followed the Rada’s dismissal on 14 July of Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, who had led the government since 17 July last year – 258 MPs voted in favour of her resignation at the time.
In his address to MPs, Koretskyy outlined the key areas of his programme in office. These include preparations for winter and support for businesses, social protection for communities near the front line, support for internally displaced persons and veterans, transparency in the government’s work, and the expansion of the defence sector.
The new Prime Minister will be sworn in once the full Cabinet has been appointed.
Koretsky took over as chairman of the board of Naftogaz in 2025. Prior to that, he had headed the companies Ukrnafta and UkrTatNafta, and had also served as chief executive of the WOG petrol station chain.
