NBU to remove font with Russian designer’s variation from 2,000 UAH banknote

Key points

  • NBU will change the font on the 2,000 UAH banknote after designers’ criticism.
  • The reason is the Bickham Script font with a pirated Cyrillic version by Russian designer Alexandra Gofman.
  • Designer Bohdan Gdal noticed the discrepancy and recalled a similar case with the 1,000 UAH banknote in 2019.
  • NBU Head Andriy Pyshny: legally, there are no claims, but the banknote with Stus should not have any “shadow of association with Russia”.
  • The letters will be executed according to the official Cyrillic version of the font, without any author’s variations.

The National Bank of Ukraine will change the font on the new 2,000 UAH banknote after designers’ criticism, announced NBU Head Andriy Pyshny.

The banknote’s design is linked to an adaptation of the font made by a Russian designer. Earlier, designer and font developer Bohdan Gdal wrote on social media that the new banknote features the Bickham Script font with a pirated Cyrillic version by Russian designer Alexandra Gofman. According to him, a similar situation occurred in 2019 with the 1,000 UAH banknote.

Pyshny noted that legally, there are no claims, but the banknote with poet and dissident Vasyl Stus, who was killed by Russia, should not have any “shadow of association with Russia”.

The graphic image of the letters will be created in full compliance with the official Cyrillic version of the Bickham Script font, without any author’s variations.

Since the banknote has not yet been launched into production, the changes in design will not affect the introduction schedule – September 4.
