In Ukraine, 327 organ transplants were performed in the first half of the year

Key points

  • 327 organ transplants in Ukraine in the first half of 2026 in 21 medical institutions.
  • 184 kidney transplants, 88 liver transplants, 55 heart transplants.
  • Over 73% of transplants are from deceased donors.
  • The most transplants were performed at the First Medical Association of Lviv (84 patients).
  • Every tenth transplant is for a child, 31 transplants in six months versus 44 for the entire last year.
  • 280 hematopoietic stem cell transplants – almost 30% more than last year.

In the first half of 2026, 327 organ transplants were performed in Ukraine in 21 medical institutions. This is more than in the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Health.

Among the transplants performed:

  • 184 kidney transplants;
  • 88 liver transplants;
  • 55 heart transplants.

The share of transplants from deceased donors remains stable and high – over 73% of the total number of transplants.

The most organ transplants were performed at the First Medical Association of Lviv – 84 patients received help there. The top five institutions also included:

  • Medical Center of the city of Kyiv – 46 transplants;
  • National Scientific Center of Surgery and Transplantology named after O.O. Shalimov – 40;
  • Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine – 37;
  • Clinic “Obereg” – 35.

Every tenth of the 327 transplants was performed on a child – 31 organ transplants were performed on children in six months, while there were 44 for the entire last year.

Such dynamics were achieved due to the priority for children on the waiting list: after patients with the first status of urgency, donor organs are first offered to children.

Over the six months of 2026, 94 potential deceased donors were identified after brain death was confirmed, and donation was possible in 80 cases.

The largest number of effective deceased donors was provided by medical institutions in Kyiv, Lviv, and Khmelnytskyi regions. In four regions, except for the front-line regions, there was not a single effective deceased donor in six months.

As of July 1, 2026, 4,290 patients are on the waiting list for a transplant. Of these, 2,085 are registered in the Unified State Information System of Transplantation and participate in the distribution of donor organs, and another 2,205 are undergoing additional examination and documentation. Among those waiting for a transplant, there are 94 children.

Over the first half of 2026, 280 hematopoietic stem cell transplants were performed – almost 30% more than in the same period last year. Such operations were performed in 12 medical centers, the most – in the NDS “Okhmatdyt” (58), Cherkasy Clinical Oncology Center (51), and Medical Center of the city of Kyiv (47).

The most complex transplants – from unrelated donors – are performed only in three of these centers: NDS “Okhmatdyt”, Cherkasy Oncology Center, and Medical Center of Kyiv. Over six months, they performed 50 such operations.
