The State Service of Education Quality of Ukraine has published the results of a three-year monitoring study on the quality of education, within which students of the 6th and 8th grades were tested in Ukrainian language and mathematics. The results were presented on June 3.
The study took place from 2023 to 2025 and was designed to track the dynamics of learning in a state of war. Last year, 4,397 sixth-graders and 4,346 eighth-graders took math tests, and 4,342 and 4,120 students, respectively, took Ukrainian language tests. The sample included 226 schools, and the testing took place on the “All-Ukrainian School Online” platform.
Sixth-graders maintained stable performance in math and slightly improved their results in Ukrainian language. In the 8th grade, a decline in academic achievement was recorded, most notably in math, and an increase in the share of students with low results. The average success over the three years has hardly changed: 44% in 2023, 45.4% in 2024, and 44.6% in 2025.
Students perform better on tasks that require knowledge reproduction and significantly worse on those that require analysis, reasoning, and application of learned material in a new context. Students from urban schools traditionally outperform their peers from rural areas, and the indicators of frontline regions remain unstable.
A survey of students showed a link between results and psycho-emotional state: anxiety and lack of parental support correlate with lower scores, while systematic completion of homework correlates with higher scores.
