Feather wedding wreath from Prykarpattia receives Intangible Cultural Heritage status

The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine included the art of creating a feather wedding wreath from the village of Velykyi Kliuchiv in Ivano-Frankivsk region in the National List of Elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The feather wreath of the bride is one of the most solemn and symbolic elements of the traditional wedding attire of the village. Its large round shape, similar to a crown, emphasizes the special status of the bride as the central figure of the ritual.

The base of the wreath consists of densely laid white goose down, shaped into numerous flowers that cover the entire surface of the product. Similar flowers made of down are used to decorate the groom’s hat.

Each color of the decoration has its own meaning. White symbolizes purity and light, red – life and love, green – youth and fertility, and gold – wealth and blessing.

The central ornamental composition has aesthetic and protective value.

The technology of manufacturing the wreath is preserved and passed down by master craftsmen of the older generation. Daughters and granddaughters are taught directly during the preparation for wedding rituals.

Inclusion of the element in the National List will contribute to its preservation, popularization, and transmission to future generations.
