The government has approved changes to the rules for issuing driver’s licenses and admitting citizens to drive vehicles, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.

Driver’s licenses will now be issued for different periods depending on the category of vehicle:

  • 15 years – for motorcycle and car drivers of categories A1, A, B, B1, BE;
  • 5 years – for truck and passenger transport drivers of categories C, CE, C1, C1E, D, DE, D1, D1E, T.

After the restoration of mandatory medical examinations during the exchange of a driver’s license, regular confirmation (every 15 years) of the state of health will become one of the important elements of admission to drive vehicles. This corresponds to European practice and will contribute to increasing road safety.

– Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko.

Klymenko noted that special attention is paid to drivers who carry out passenger and freight transportation, given the increased level of responsibility on the roads: they will exchange their licenses every 5 years with a mandatory medical examination.

Previously issued permanent driver’s licenses remain valid until the date specified in the document. When exchanging a license – every 5 or 15 years – it is not necessary to retake the exams, unless otherwise provided by law.

The resolution comes into force on the day of its official publication.
