The National Antarctic Science Center has announced a competition for the 32nd Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition. Its participants will work at the Academician Vernadsky station during 2027-2028.

The team traditionally consists of two parts – researchers and life support specialists. Scientists conduct observations of the climate, geomagnetic field, ozone layer, and living nature around Galindez Island in Western Antarctica. Technical personnel are responsible for the uninterrupted operation of the station – energy, communication, food, and medical support for winterers. According to previous expeditions, the team usually consists of around twelve to thirteen people.

The competition is open and does not set restrictions based on age, gender, or other characteristics. The National Antarctic Science Center considers education, professional experience, high professional level, and the ability to work in Antarctic conditions as the key criteria for selection.

The Academician Vernadsky station is located on Galindez Island in the Argentine Islands archipelago and remains the only Ukrainian representation on the icy continent. Ukraine received it from the United Kingdom in 1996, and research has been ongoing ever since. Polar explorers live and work at the station all year round, detached from the mainland. The previous, 31st expedition for 2026-2027, was led by a woman for the first time – meteorologist Anzhelika Hanchuk.

Detailed requirements for candidates, a list of necessary documents, and selection stages are published in the official announcement on the National Antarctic Science Center and Ministry of Education websites. Document submission is open until August 7th.
