The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine included the “Tradition of Sokal Ceramics and the Art of its Creation” in the National List of Elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine.
Sokal ceramics originated in the territory of Sokal – now a city in the Sheptytskyi district of the Lviv region, the administrative center of the Sokal urban community. This is one of the leading ceramic centers in Ukraine, known since the 15th century.
It is distinguished by its color and motifs: wide, laconic strokes of green, yellow, and brown colors on a white background, large compositional elements with images of birds, branches, flowers, sunflowers, rosettes, and clocks.
The technology of production is based on traditional techniques of manual ceramics and multi-stage decorative finishing.
Clay pots, jugs, pitchers, bowls, cups, and jars are still used in daily life – for cooking, storing dairy products, water, grain, and honey. Due to the properties of clay, such dishes keep the temperature and taste of food for a long time.
Some products perform ritual and decorative functions – they are used during religious holidays, family events, weddings, and calendar rituals, as well as for decorating homes.
Local communities now need to take into account the recommendations for the protection of the element, which were developed by the Expert Council on Intangible Cultural Heritage at the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.
The National List of Elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine has existed since 2012. Currently, it includes over 120 elements.
