28 seismometers have been installed at the National Reserve “Sofia Kyivska” to monitor the impact of missile strikes, explosions, and transport on the complex’s landmarks. The project was implemented with the support of UNESCO. The director general of the reserve, Nelya Kukovalska, told Suspilne about this.
20 sensors were mounted on the Sofia Cathedral, and 8 more on the bell tower. UNESCO also funded the software, a special computer for data processing, and the work of Italian specialists who installed the system.
According to Kukovalska, the sensors will record vibrations from explosions, missile and drone flights, car traffic, concerts, and other external factors.
The data obtained will be used to create a model of the stress-strain state of the landmarks, which will allow determining the most vulnerable areas of the buildings and planning their reinforcement in a timely manner.
The system for monitoring the state of landmarks has been working in the reserve for about 20 years and controls the state of buildings, soils, groundwater, microclimate, and environmental indicators. The plan to supplement it with vibration sensors was made even before the full-scale war, but then they refused the free offer of an American company due to the high cost of delivery and customs clearance.
In addition to the impact of hostilities, the system will help monitor the consequences of possible earthquakes in the Vrancea zone in Romania, which are periodically felt in Ukraine. The next cycle of seismic activity in this region is expected in the coming years.
During one of the last massive shellings of Kyiv, a missile “Iskander” fell near the reserve, but no damage to the landmarks was recorded. Kukovalska noted that the new sensors have already recorded several powerful attacks on the city, and the final results will be analyzed by specialists after the system is fully configured.
