On June 22, Ukraine commemorates the Day of Sorrow and Honoring the Memory of War Victims. The date is associated with the beginning of a new, particularly devastating stage of World War II for Ukraine.
During those years of war, Ukraine lost between 8 and 10 million people. Behind these numbers are the fates of civilians of different ages whose lives were cut short by combat, occupation, and persecution.
More than 2.2 million people were forcibly taken out of Ukraine for work during the war. Dozens of cities lay in ruins, villages were burned to the ground.
For Ukraine, June 22 remains a day of remembrance for everyone whose life was taken by the war and a reminder of the price of freedom.
Today, Ukraine is again facing an aggressive war. Russia is killing civilians, destroying cities, trying to deprive Ukrainians of their right to freedom, security, and their own future.
