The scandal surrounding Olga Martynovska’s interview with Masha Yefrosynina has become one of the most prominent media conflicts in recent weeks in the Ukrainian information space. The episode on Yefrosynina’s YouTube channel was supposed to be an ordinary frank conversation with a well-known culinary expert, but a few seconds of video turned it into a reason for massive criticism. The judge of the culinary project “MasterChef” found herself at the center, whose story about her childhood determined the perception of the entire conversation.
What was said in the interview
The conversation touched on Martynovska’s biography, and the culinary expert recalled herself as a mischievous child. According to her, she climbed trees, threw cats over the roof, and then ran to catch them, and also tied firecrackers to the cats’ tails. The fragment was short, but it was this that spread through social media as a separate video clip.
The reaction of the audience was exacerbated by the context in which these words were spoken. The recollection sounded with a smile, and the atmosphere of the conversation was light and casual. Martynovska was telling the story, Yefrosynina was laughing, and the whole episode was presented as a funny story. The combination of content and tone became what was discussed most actively.

Why the reaction was so sharp
Users were outraged by the content of what was said, and even more so by the fact that both women were laughing during this story. In the discussions, there was amazement that such memories were voiced without explicit condemnation of the described behavior. The discussion quickly went beyond the comments under the video and spilled over to other platforms.
A separate line of criticism was the issue of editorial responsibility. Part of the audience was surprised at how the fragment got on the air, since a whole team worked on the interview, which was not alerted to what was said. Claims were addressed to the persons in the frame and at the same time to those who prepared and released the material.
How Yefrosynina responded
Yefrosynina was the first to react to the situation. In a comment under the announcement of the interview, she explained that the resonant phrase was an unsuccessful hyperbole, not a real story from the guest’s life. The TV host emphasized that neither of them supports cruel treatment of animals, and announced the removal of this fragment from the episode.
Yefrosynina’s team also noted that the editorial office did not intend to broadcast or romanticize such stories. The removal of the episode was the first practical step that the TV host’s side tried to take to ease the tension.

Martynovska’s apology
After a wave of outrage, the fragment from the video was removed, and later Martynovska herself recorded an apology. In her Instagram story, she stated that she did not want to offend anyone’s feelings, and emphasized that she does not support or promote cruelty to animals or violence against them. The culinary expert apologized for the hyperbole of this story and added that she said it uncontrollably, telling about herself. In her address, she emphasized that only protection and love should be shown to animals.
The first apology did not close the topic. Martynovska made another statement, in which she assured her subscribers that she had never actually been cruel to animals, and her words were a metaphor of a hooligan childhood, taken out of context. This post caused a new wave of reactions, and the chef again received a portion of criticism. The change in wording from “hyperbole” to “metaphor” became a reason for some of the audience to doubt the sincerity of the explanations.
Consequences for reputation and contracts
The scandal went beyond emotional discussions and affected the commercial side. People began to contact animal protection organizations and the Savory Pet pet food brand, with which Martynovska had an advertising partnership. The company later announced the termination of the contract and the removal of advertising materials.
The animal protection organization UAnimals also made a statement, noting that given the statute of limitations, there is no question of legal liability in this case. This clarification transferred part of the controversy from the legal plane to the ethical one.

Support from colleagues
Along with criticism, there were also voices in defense of the culinary expert. Chef Ektor Jimenez-Bravo wrote that he has known Martynovska for thirteen years as a kind, sensitive, and caring person. Volodymyr Yaroslavsky drew attention to the specifics of the format and reminded how easy it is to say something wrong in front of the camera due to stress and excitement. Colleagues from “MasterChef” shifted the focus from the phrase itself to the overall perception of the personality.
What this story shows
The scandal with Martynovska’s interview demonstrates how sensitive the topic of animal treatment has become for the Ukrainian audience and how quickly a short fragment can determine the perception of the entire conversation. Despite apologies and explanations from both sides, the discussion around the episode continued, and users continued to criticize. The termination of the advertising contract and the public reaction of the animal protection community showed that the reputational costs of one thoughtless remark can exceed any effect from the interview itself.
