Enhanced epidemiological surveillance for cholera starts in Ukraine

From June, Ukraine started an enhanced season of epidemiological surveillance for cholera, which will last until October.

Experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the regions:

  • will test cases of severe or atypical acute intestinal infections;
  • will study environmental samples to detect the circulation of cholera vibrio;
  • will assess risks associated with water, food, and sanitation.

In parallel, theoretical, practical, and simulation training will be conducted for medical personnel on the prevention and diagnosis of the disease.

Cholera is an acute intestinal infection that is mainly transmitted through contaminated water or food. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, it is curable.

According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, from January 1 to May 26, 2026, there were 68,749 cases of this disease worldwide. In Ukraine, no cases were recorded during this period.

The Ministry of Health recommends:

  • avoiding bathing and fishing in contaminated water bodies;
  • not buying products — including fish — from informal markets;
  • washing hands thoroughly before preparing food and after using the toilet;
  • drinking clean water;
  • washing and heat-treating products carefully.
