  • The appearance of a rare species is associated with spruce plantations near administrative buildings in Chornobyl.

In the Chornobyl Radioecological Biosphere Reserve, for the second time, they recorded the nesting of a goldcrest – the smallest bird in Ukraine, listed in the Red Book.

The bird’s body is about 9 cm long, and its weight is from 4 to 6.5 g.

During observations, ornithologists noticed a male who regularly brought insects to the nest. Scientists consider this a sign of feeding the chicks.

Researchers suggest that the appearance of a rare species is associated with spruce plantations near administrative buildings in Chornobyl. It is these coniferous trees that provide the goldcrest with suitable conditions for nesting and foraging.
