Shelling can occur suddenly and at any time, so it is important to know how to act to minimize risks to your life and health. Here are some tips from the UNICEF Ukraine Office and the State Emergency Service (SES).
Seek Shelter
The best option is a specially designated shelter. If such a shelter is not available, use:
- Underground passages
- Parking garages
- Metro stations
- Basement or lower-floor rooms in buildings
These locations can provide the best protection from debris and blast waves.
What to Do If Shelter Is Not Available
If you hear explosions and do not see a nearby shelter, follow these recommendations:
- Lie down on the ground as quickly as possible.
- Seek refuge in a depression: this could be a ditch, curb, trench, or any other depression in the ground.
- If you are with a child, first place the child in the depression and then cover them with your body.
- Assume a safe position:
- Lie face down.
- Cross your legs and cover your head with your hands.
- Close your eyes and open your mouth. This helps protect you from concussion if a shell explodes nearby.
- Do not lift your head unless absolutely necessary.
If You Are in a Vehicle
- Stop the vehicle immediately.
- Move away from the road towards a location away from buildings and structures.
- Lie down on the ground as described above.
Following these simple rules will help reduce risks and ensure your safety during shelling. Remember, your safety is the priority, so remain calm and act thoughtfully.
